During the great Earth-Klinzhai War of 2256, the MK-I dreadnought then in service was found to underperform, sometimes disastrously so, in combat with enemy forces. Following the war, Fleet Special Projects Division saw the need for a better-designed, dedicated Command-and-Control ship. The result was the Foley class dreadnought. These state-of-the-art vessels could perform as fleet command ships, orchestrating combat with other allied spacecraft in confrontation with hostile forces. In peacetime, they could function at the flagship of an exploratory squadron.
The Foley class features the latest in circumferential drive technology with triple PB-32C FTL drive units. Armed with 26 MK-VII-B directed-energy emitters, ten torpedo launchers (8 forward, 2 aft), and CRM-114 countermeasures, this ship has been shown to perform more than adequately against any foreseen hostile force. USS Foley is equipped with two shuttle bays, located at the bow and stern of the engineering hull, which are connected to vehicle maintenance hangars below. Smaller utility craft can enter and exit through the forward bay, where they are parked when not in use.
